Heat press machines can work with a wide array of materials and substrates such as wood, leather, cotton, polyester, nylon, specially coated metals, glass, and even ceramics.
Having a reliable heat press, the right accessories, and knowledge of which types of products you can decorate with these tools will allow you to get even more creative with your designs. The Know How

Before setting up your new heat press, review the instruction manual and follow all of the manufacturer’s recommendations for safety and maintenance. Every machine has its own quirks and differentiating features, and it is necessary you understand these for your machine.
To ensure your safety and guarantee your products turn out flawlessly, place the heat press on a solid, level surface. Make sure you are able to access the press from all angles and that it is the correct height for the operator. Always keep your press in a location where children and pets cannot access it. Once the press has a home, turn it on and begin getting the feel for operating it at various temperatures and pressures.
Now you are ready to begin pressing transfers onto your substrate of choice. Adjust the press to the correct temperature and pressure based on what your transfer product specifications tell you. These specifications should also tell you how long to press each transfer for and when to peel the transfer off of the substrate afterwards.
Prepare your substrate before you print on it. This preparation process will vary widely depending on what you are printing on, but for something like a t-shirt, it is as simple as performing a short press without any transfers in place. This will remove excess moisture from the shirt and also smooth out any wrinkles that are present.
Make sure the substrate is positioned how you want it on the lower platen and perform the pre-press. Then place your transfer in the correct location and check to make sure the ink side of the transfer is facing down onto your substrate. Perform your press keeping in mind everything you read in your machine’s instruction manual as well as the settings your transfer product recommends.
Depending on your substrate, your transfer types, and the size/style of your heat press, you may also want to utilize Teflon sheets or covers during your process. These sheets or covers can help protect the lower platen of your press from transfer ink. They are made with the same non-stick material as the Teflon pans people cook on at home.
